Did you know that hummingbirds are pollinators too!โโ If you don’t have a perfect blend of flowers throughout summer you may need to provide them nectar.. but the red store-bought nectar slowly kills the hummers. Here is a very simple recipe that is a much safer solution.
This is a short post as it is right to the point. I started feeding hummingbirds about 10 years ago and found out before feeding my first year that the store bought and red dyes are not safe for the hummingbirds. When I started I had only one variety of plants that hummingbirds could eat from. So I’ve been making this tasty treat for them as I slowly add more plants they can enjoy. The hummingbirds come back every year in early spring and wait on my porch until I put out the nectar.
Homemade Hummingbird Nectar
Ingredients
- 4 parts water
- 1 part sugar
Instructions
- Put them in a saucepan and bring to a boil, boil for two minutes and take pan off the heat. Make sure the nectar has cooled off completely and serve!
Notes
ย Please donโt add red dye.. again itโs unsafe. They will eat it but it causes a slow death for them. They like red coloring but they donโt need it to find the nectar.
