I’ve been slowly switching to saving my own plant seeds, saving seeds from more and more plants each year, so I can be self-sufficient in that aspect. So when it came to carrot seeds I thought, hmm, how?
I looked it up and the proceeded to do the following:
- Leave a few carrots in the ground at the end of the season. Leave them in the ground throughout the next summer. They will establish flowers at the top of their stems.
- Closer to Fall these flower heads will turn brown. This is when you can go out and find tons of seeds.
I kept about 15 carrots in the ground and didn’t need to, so I have a lot of seeds. I think for me, being just a small hobby gardener, I would maybe save about four or five carrots in the ground each year for their seeds.
